Supplements are just as defined - something to contribute towards something else. They’re by no means the priority when it comes to your health and fitness. Most people should get all the nutrients they need by having a varied and balanced diet, although some people may need to take extra supplements.
Many people choose to take supplements but taking too much or taking them for too long could be harmful. The Department of Health and Social Care recommends certain supplements for some groups of people who are at risk of deficiency.
A nutritional deficiency occurs when the body doesn’t absorb or get from food the necessary amount of a nutrient. The frequency and dosage of a supplement depends on how severe the deficiency is. Your doctor or dietitian can determine this.
Talk to your doctor before taking any nutritional supplements.
Supplements can be separated into two different categories, dependent upon their role in your health and fitness. They could contribute towards nutrition, performance, general lifestyle, or health.
Don’t feel too overwhelmed by the supplements referenced in this guide. This is a general overview, and not all will necessarily apply to you.
